Hanamaka Gardens
I have been dreaming about a community garden for over 20 years and finally went back to school last year to gain the tools to build it. I am now at a place where the garden is starting to take form and a plan is in action.
The garden is the home of organic foods that will be placed into the public school system, give veterans a planting ground to call home, and give the elderly a way to interact with their youthful counterparts, the children who will be the recipients of the education and produce that this garden provides.
It comes as a gift to me and my new found partner (yes we both showed up at the same time and place with the same idea) and it is a beautiful 2 acre lot in Sacramento, CA. We are now clearing the weeds and preparing to lay out sub-plots. Others have shown up and are helping with the building of the garden and to create this with a group of like-minded individuals give it a life that only happens through community. I am so blessed and grateful that the dream expands on a daily basis. We are working on getting our non-profit status right now, and welcome any and all offerings of knowledge, tools, monies, skill, or blessings to help us bring this project to fruition.

What an awesome, powerful idea. I love that you have incorporated the idea of having veterans taking on the teaching role in this concept. And that students in the education system will take part. I believe that concepts like this should be an integral part of primary education. So many of our younger generations haven’t got a clue about living off the land. If someday some cataclysmic event were to happen, our youngsters would be hard-pressed to be able to build back from it. With basic, life-sustaining knowledge such as this, they would be far better prepared to help re-organize food systems in a post-event world.
